Dracula Day
About This Date
The 1931 version of Dracula was the first classic horror film made by Universal Pictures. It was based on Bram Stoker's 1897 novel. The popular vampire story had been made as a silent movie in the 1920s and was also a hit Broadway play.
Hungarian stage actor Bela Lugosi starred in the smash-hit theater production and was signed to make the movie. He quickly became the definitive screen vampire, and Dracula was his most famous role. Universal's next picture was the successful movie Frankenstein.
