Since the Chinese invented papermaking, people think they also invented wallpaper. Wrong! Wallpaper was invented in France during the late 15th century. It was intended to be a cheap substitute for fancy woven tapestries, but it soon became very popular. When the paper mills started running across Europe, wallpaper could have stenciled, hand-painted or printed designs. |
