Pancake Day is Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent.
In England, housewives always hurried to the church when the bell rang to be "Shriven" for their sins.
But in 1445, a housewife in Olney started her pancakes late. They weren't done when the bell rang, so she ran to church carrying her griddle with her. This started an annual event in England - a pancake race over a 415 yard course from the "town pump" to the church.
This tradition moved to Liberal, KS in 1950 to make it an international race between the two towns.
