Waffles were sold on the streets of Paris during the 12th century. They gradually spread across Europe and became very popular in Germany and Holland. It was the Dutch who brought waffles to American during the founding of New Amsterdam (New York City). And yes, the indentions are only to keep syrup from running off the edges. Belgian Waffles |
