About
This Date
In 1829, two men patented portable instruments based on the same principle - free reeds activated by a keyboard and a set of bellows. Sir Charles Wheatstone of Middlesex, England, called his the concertina.
Cyrill Demian in Vienna, Austria, named his the accordian. The instrument came to the U.S. in the mid-1830s. Also know as a squeeze box or a hand harmonica, it was the favorite instrument for both Confederate and Union soldiers during the Civil War.
