Popeye's Birthday |
Popeye first appeared in 1929, as part of the "Thimble Theatre" comic strip. He jumped to the movie screen in 1933 as an extra in a Betty Boop cartoon titled "Popeye the Sailor". He sang "I'm Popeye the Sailor Man", had his first fight with Bluto over Olive Oyl and said his first words - "Well, blow me down". The spinach growers credit Popeye with increasing spinach consumption by 33% and saving the spinach industry in the 1930s! |
