Bison Lovers Day |
The bison (buffalo) is the largest land mammal in North America. Before settlers moved across the continent, their herd size was about 30 million animals that provided meat, clothes, shoes, houses, and tools for Native Americans. Unregulated killing reduced their number to about 1,500 by the late 1800s. Legal protection and refuge preserves have helped restore the population to over 350,000 animals today. |
