About
This Date
Richard James was a naval engineer. He originally developed the Slinky as an anti-vibration device for ship instruments in the early 1940s. But, when the Slinky didn't work for the Navy, his wife decided it should be turned into a toy. They picked out the name and decided to demonstrate it at Gimbels Department Store in Philadelphia in 1946. An hour and a half after the first demonstration, they had sold 400 Slinkys - and it went on to become one of the most successful toys of all time!
