DORIS DAY

Birth Name: Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff

Born: April 3, 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio
Best Known As: Academy Award winning Actress
Trivia: Famous for her freckles

Born into a German Catholic family, Doris was raised by her mother after her parents divorced when she was 8. A car accident when she was 14 ended her dreams of a career as a dancer, but she soon discovered she could sing. She began touring with the Les Brown Band when she was 16. She then appeared with Frank Sinatra on the Saturday Night Hit Parade in the late 1940s. She got her start in films by substituting as a last minute replacement for Betty Hutton in "Romance in the High Seas" (1948). This led to numerous “good girl” roles in musicals and comedies such as "Calamity Jane" and "Young at Heart". During the late 1950s and early 1960s, she was teamed with Cary Grant and Rock Hudson in a series of popular comedies and nominated for an Academy Award for "Pillow Talk" in 1959. Her last film was "With Six You Get Eggroll" in 1968. She then started a career on tv and also co-wrote her autobiography. Now retired from acting, she is an activist for animal rights and runs the Doris Day Animal Foundation in Carmel, California. Married 4 times, she has one son, Terry.
