Preserving Your Roses Forever
Weight Pressing
Place the roses between the pages of a book. Close the book and stack something heavy on top. Roses preserved with this method can be arranged in framed displays. This is the best method for a single rose.
Heat Pressing
Put a rose between two pieces of waxed paper and press the waxed paper with a medium hot iron. New pieces of waxed paper must by used for each rose.
Hang & Dry
Hang the roses upside down in a dark place. Cover with clear plastic to keep off the dust as they dry, but make lots of tiny holes for air circulation. Roses lose color and shrink when air-dried.
Desiccants
Bury the flowers in a granular, desiccating material. This can be purchased from craft stores or floral shops. The different types are Oolitic sand, silica gel, and borax.
Glycerize
Mash the end of each rose stem with a hammer. Put the stems in a warm mixture of glycerin water - 1 part glycerin to 2 parts water. Keep the solution about 6 inches deep. The process is done when all the leaves turns golden brown. This can take 2-3 weeks. Glycerin can be purchased at your local pharmacy.
